You are invited to watch a dream come true...
Some years later I expected that I would buy into the house owned by my partner at the time and in which we lived along with his four children, Dillon, Ben, Elias and Mikaela.
After Mike and I broke up I began to consider home ownership anew. It still held little appeal. I didn't spend much time at home. I also liked the convenience of renting. But I began to dutifully pay off my credit cards and follow a budget. One day when I was living in West Asheville it occured to me that if I could have the house of my dreams then home ownership would be worth the hassle.
And what is the house of my dreams? I want a home that uses solar energy, water catchment systems, and the methods of permaculuture to create a whole system. And I want it to be located right down-town Asheville, NC.
Last September at a retreat this dream exploded into a vision of whole community for my neighborhood, my city, my region, my planet. Turns out my dream for my home was never just for me. My dream can only truly come true when my neighborhood and city are invited to the table too.
In this blog I intend to tell and record the story of this project. I hope this journal will inspire all who read it.
This quote by Wendell Barry rings like a bell for me.
I don't know if I'll be here for my lifetime, but I'm excited to spend some life time giving attention to building a better world from right here at home.
Participating in Zaadz
In my job as a fundraiser and environmental advocate I spend considerable time at the computer. I've realized since joining Zaadz how little time I prioritize for sitting at my computer when I'm out of the office. I bought a house in late June and the summer has been filled with settling in.
So my participation in this community has been in baby steps. I trust that these small advances will be sufficient to keep me connected with this wonderful growing community.
My first priority is to Create a blog for my house project in which I will retro-fit this house into a model of urban self-sufficiency. This small peice of land on which my house sits will use passive solar and solar technologies for energy, water catchment systems for collecting and using rainwater, permaculture garden and landscaping. This blog will capture all that I learn as the process continues.
